UCR Science to policy held a Policy Pitch Competition. Think shark tank for public policy proposals. 3 UCR students (Sarah Bobardt, Elijah Hall, and Stephanie Piper) and 2 UCLA students (Bineh Ndefru and Yuki Hebner) competed for a cash prize and trip to Sacramento to pitch their winning policy to lawmakers. Pitches ranged from ecological preservation to protecting reproductive rights.

The competition was judged by special guests: Alf Brandt, General Counsel to the California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon; Dr. Amy Gilson, Director of External and Legislative Affairs at the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA); and Doug Brown who formally served as Chief-of-Staff to the 2008 Governor’s Conference on Small Business and Entrepreneurship as the Principal Consultant with the California State Senate. Clarity, feasibility, and public impact were a few of the categories being scored.

Congratulations to Bineh Ndefru, who won first place.
